We optimized ourselves out of the picture. Built ourselves into something a machine can do, and left behind much of what a machine can't. The Human Chapter is about reconnecting with being human. Sharper questions, braver conversations, and something to belong to.

WHY NOW

Being human is about to have a renaissance.

A nearly empty cafe at night, one person sitting alone at the counter under a row of hanging lights.

Something’s shifting.

For years the move was to act more like a machine. Faster, more logical, endlessly optimized. We did it, and we got good at it. But a machine will always out-machine you, and now they’re taking those jobs back.

A single figure standing on a dark hillside, silhouetted against the Milky Way.

The interesting part.

Machines can handle the doing. What they can’t do is decide what matters, tell you what any of it felt like, or have anything at stake in you. They can imitate all of it, but they can’t mean it, or answer for it. That part is ours.

A large bonfire burning against a deep blue evening sky, with trees along the horizon.

We’re out of practice.

We’ve let the human parts go a little, which is part of why so many of us feel so far apart. Like any skill, it weakens without use and it comes back with it. This is where The Human Chapter steps in.

THE METHOD

The way back is through play.

Play is the most serious learning technology we have. Its how we all first practiced being human, as children. Its how you try out ideas, follow curiosity, find out whats true, and get braver, with stakes low enough that going again feels safe.

Everything The Human Chapter makes is built on that.

GET STARTED

Think, play, & explore what it means to be human.

A black-and-white patterned water bottle and a cream cap with the orange Human Chapter logo.
Two phone screens showing The Human Chapter app: a card reading "Which rule do you break to stay kind?" and the essay list.
A dark Substack cover for The Human Chapter reading "What does it mean to be human?" above the white blob logo.

The Essays

This is where we play with curiosity. We explore a small dimension of being human, ask the questions, and follow the stories wherever they go. New pieces regularly, through the end of the year.

The Cards

This app is where you practice. Every theme generates conversation play cards: questions to sit with, things to try, dares that override a reflex. Some you do alone, some with others. One new card a day until the end of the year.

The Shop

This is where it gets physical. Items to wear and use that say you’re a part of the movement. Even special printed edition of the cards. Making a purchase helps keep this play movement going.
